ACA Insurance FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

The Affordable Care Act (ACA), often called Obamacare, is a federal law that requires most Americans to have health insurance and makes coverage more accessible. It created a marketplace where individuals and families can shop for plans, and it mandates that insurers cover pre-existing conditions with no lifetime dollar limits.

Most U.S. citizens and lawfully present immigrants who are not incarcerated can enroll in an ACA plan. You do not need to pass a medical exam or meet health requirements — coverage is guaranteed regardless of your medical history or pre-existing conditions.

Depending on your household income relative to the Federal Poverty Level (FPL), you may qualify for Premium Tax Credits that lower your monthly premium, and Cost-Sharing Reductions (CSRs) that reduce your deductibles, copays, and out-of-pocket maximums. Many enrollees pay as little as $0 per month.

The standard Open Enrollment Period (OEP) runs from November 1 to January 15 each year. Outside of that window, you may still enroll if you experience a qualifying life event — such as losing employer coverage, getting married, having a baby, or moving to a new state.

It depends on the plan's network. Our advisors will verify whether your preferred doctors, specialists, and hospitals are in-network before you enroll, so there are no surprises. We compare multiple carriers to find the plan that best matches your existing care relationships.

If you miss Open Enrollment without a qualifying event, you will need to wait until the next OEP. However, many people qualify for a Special Enrollment Period (SEP) without realizing it. Contact us and we will review your situation — there may be a window still available to you.
